How can I get RS422 Serial Deck Control from a Mac G4?

While most Mac's have had RS422 serial ports since the very first Mac in the early 1980's, more recent models have dropped the familiar Modem and Printer ports. These serial ports were 8-pin miniDIN connectors that were able to directly control the video industry's RS422 serially-controlled VTRs.

For the current Mac G4, however, one needs to recreate an RS422 serial port in order to interface to studio decks. Two possibilities exist: the Stealth Serial Port and a USB-to-serial adapter. The Stealth Serial Port, manufactured by GeeThree, fits inside the G4 in place of the modem board. Several manufacturers produce USB-to-serial adapters, of which we have tested just a few. Our favorite has been the Keyspan model 28x, a model that has always worked in a variety of systems. Keyspan products are available from a wide variety of Mac retailers.

From the 8-pin miniDIN connector, our own SC-M/9M serial cables will make the connection to any RS422-capable VTR.
