model RS-USB/4

Installation Instructions

Hardware

The RS-USB/4 adapter cable connects between a Universal Serial Bus (USB) connector and any RS422-capable VTR. When installing the RS-USB/4, be careful to note the correct connector orientation for each cable.  The RS422 side (9-pin connector) can be extended quite a long distance should more cable length be required. RS422 is specified out to 4000 feet (1200 meters).

Before using the RS-USB/4 for the first time, it will be necessary to install a driver found on the enclosed disk. Simply run the installer “PL-2303 Driver Installer.exe” for Windows or "MacUSBdriver.zip" for Macs. Now when the RS-USB/4 adapter cable is plugged into one of your USB ports, an internal LED will light within the 9-pin backshell. The backshell is translucent enough to clearly see the green LED.

Software

The enclosed disk contains several software packages. Each program is fairly well documented on the diskette.  Some of the programs directly support the RS-USB/4 adapter cable while others are of general interest. “Comchk32” is a valuable diagnostic tool for finding how your PC installed your RS-USB/4 cable; the indicated COM port number may need to be selected on any application you use. Some applications will search out the COM port on its own, other applications need to be set-up or configured for your particular system. For example, the enclosed “Adhere” software (sorry, we don't have a Mac version) needs the COM port set-up to match that used by the RS-USB/4 before the deck control is possible.
